First year I had my plot (2015) it was monsoon rain on Good Friday and keen though I was I decided to not do any planting that particular day 
Another thing I learnt was not to sow & plant stuff at the same time as everyone else...ie Monty's Jobs For The Weekend
I'm in Northumberland and he's a LOT further south so when he says sow tomato seeds I know I still have a few weeks grace 
Haven't even started them yet tho' thinking of doing so in the coming week. Each year is different but you soon get to know what's right for your part of the world and how the weather conditions are looking.
The one thing I always tell new gardeners is NEVER underestimate how fast weeds will grow!!!!! Turn your back in May & Early June and they grow virtually overnight!!!
