  • Non-fruiting chilli

Have successfully grown a plant from a shop bought chilli seed last Autumn.

It is now about a foot and a half high and has lots of flowers

They dry up and fall off though!

I have been using a small paintbrush to try and pollinate them but there doesn't seem to be any pollen and it's not helping.

I intend to buy another chilli plant from a shop and cross pollinate

Any thoughts as to whether this might be successful?

    thanks

You don't need another plant, it is self-fertile, the reason your plant isn't setting fruit is because it isn't ready to. There are LOTS of possible reasons - you could be over or under watering it. It may be too hot or too cold. Not enough light.

Most of all you just have to be patient. Don't worry, it will set fruit.

Thanks unconcerned, I shall try and take your philosophy to heart.

Have not been able to get to the garden centre due to a new 2 week old daughter.... growing something well at least !

        Congatulations on the daughter!

I know one shouldn't really need to pollinate ones chillies...... but I do - by gently rubbing a finger tip in each flower in turn - I now have an incredible amount of sweet peppers and chillies.

        Yum!
The weeks and the years are fine. It's the days I can't cope with!

Congratulations on the new addition (daughter that is!!). I have a chilli plant in the kitchen rapidly turning into a triffid but no sign of flowers never mind fruits!
Life may not be the party we hoped for but since we're here we might as well dance
