  • Planting out hardy veg and flowers

Well the weather lately has been better suited to writing a few words on how to make a good start on DIY ark building, but I've been planting out a few peas, broad-beans and sweet-peas in my wilderness.

The v damp soil does mean that ongoing watering is not going to be needed and the feel in the air round here today is more like Spring than Winter, also the forecast is for things to warm up.

NB I am NOT advising putting anything that is frost tender in the ground yet. So no comeback please for anyone who risks their tomato plants, melons or whatever outside. Late Spring frosts are possible and my crystal ball is on the blink :-)

I've been hardening off my sweet peas and tbh they don't look that happy about being outside the greenhouse on a day like today, it's so gloomy and only 9C.
My leeks haven't germinated yet, and the onion seedlings look pretty sad, even in the greenhouse. Nothing to show from 2 sowings of cabbage either, so did a third yesterday

So no, not time for planting here........ if the forecasts can be relied on, perhaps next week conditions will improve enough for thing to start growing.

Things should start to improve from the south tomorrow, so plants should hopefully get some much needed warmth and sunshine and as less rain is forecast after the weekend the ground should start to dry out too.

Still some hints at something colder late in the month, so don't plant anything that isn't hardy unless you can protect it if frost is forecast later.

Planted my Sweet peas out last Sunday and they are looking fine.
I sowed the very early last autumn and had been gardening them off for the previous two weeks.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.
