Out of date seeds

I was given some marrow seeds that are at least 5 years out of date according to the packet, I thought to myself I'm gonna try planting them and if nothing happens I haven't lost anything. Two of the seeds have sprouted! I was wondering if anyone else has experience with out of date seeds, can most seeds be used out of date?

I have loads of seeds that are out of date. I still use them.

It's always worth sowing a pinch to see what happens, before throwing them away
Carrots and parsnips seed tends to deteriorate quickly, though.

Seeds can't read packets !
As stated give them a whirl.

Sow them. Definitely no harm in trying. I've got the odd 1 or 2 packets that are out of date. I'm still sowing and 9 out of 10 I'm getting some germination.

5 years is nothing - these guys planted seeds that were 800 years old!

No but the % seeds that germinate decrease over time - so you need to sow more old seeds than you would fresh seeds to get the same number of seedlings.
