Good to know on germination. .... was just thinking that soak for 2 days and then 2 month is a pot in and bag was a bit much - I'd forget all about them

Didn't forget about them... I have some seedlings.






Are they big enough to survive repotting? Was thinking MPC not best idea, so was going to mix sand through to give additional drainage.

Not started on bed, so will be potted for some time.....

FYI - Growing Asparagus in Containers

Asparagus is always best grown in the ground, but if necessary it can be grown in large pots or patio bags (at least 60ltrs) for a limited time. This can be handy if you want to grow a crop on the patio or if you can’t justify giving your asparagus plants a permanent space in the vegetable plot. Take a look at our Asparagus Planter Collection.
When grown in permanent beds, apsaragus crowns will crop for up to 25 years. However asparagus growing in containers has a limited lifespan and should only be expected to crop for approximately 3 or 4 seasons after its 2 year establishment period.

I planted seeds in end dec, in one of those multicell seed germinating trays, then when they were up in march moved then to 2 litre poly bags each. Then planted out in June, the tap root were quite strong and wound up in bottom of the poly bag. I suspect you will find the tap root longer than you imagine on yours and may find getting into a shallower 4" pot fun. I used a free draining potting mix as you suggested too. Seeds are my best result ie better than crowns, so much so that have ordered a few more seeds to grow and plant in any gaps next year

Fantastic. I hadn't thought of tap roots - which of course is part of the learning curve.

Planted the new seed and all bar one germinated and are 1cm tall already which is useful as the newly planted crowns are not improving much

New asparagus crowns extinction continues here, now down to 10 out of 20, good thing they were free replacements

The seeds planted 4 weeks ago are rouring away 6 inch odd tall
