  • my spuds are showing

you may recall I planted my earlies (sharpes express and charlotte) on 25 march, just before the weather turned. they've had several days (weeks) where they have been below the water table. and now they are breaking the surface!

    tough little cookies aren't they?

good news - I checked a few bags I planted up and kept in the poly-tunnel the other day and could just see some beginning there.

PS don't forget to keep an eye on the weather forecast in case you need to cover them one night.

Some of my potatoes are also showing leaves. Interestingly I planted 2 buckets of Charlotte on 13th March and 2 more buckets on 23rd March. The first shoots showed in one of the early buckets on Thursday, and the 2nd bucket yesterday. Today I have a shoot appearing in one of the later planted buckets. I find that more than a little interesting.

One of the buckets of anyas I planted a couple of weeks ago are just peeking through. Ive decided I absolutely loath digging trenches and mounding up (I did 4 rows this morning and my hip is killing me), so for the rest im going to experiment - im calling it the sandcastle method.

Im going to use my bulb planter to carve out holes to which I’ll put a handful of manure and then the potato, putting the displaced earth back in the hole. Each hole will be covered with a small mound of soil. Once the leaves start to show, im going to use a sandcastle bucket of compost to cover the leaves to ‘earth up’. The way I see it, the additional compost will help improve the soil whilst saving my hip. No idea if it will work, but we can only try!

I used a bulb planter to do mine - mainly to cut through the rooty mix of the up-turned turf. I'm hoping to use it to plant my loo rolls later in the year too.

I put my maincrop in today. be interesting to see how long they take.

Mine went in ground today, so hopefully won’t be too long before they peep through

Mine went into tubs in the greenhouse mid-February and, having all come up, got evicted last week so I could get access to all the irrigation points to test and set them up.
Since then, the spuds have gone rampant - the 1st early Swifts are living up to their name and must be well over 18" tall now. The 2nd early Carlingfords and the maincrop Maris Pipers, King Edwards and a couple of last year's Valors which I forgot to eat are only about half that height but looking very happy.
Hopefully I'll do better than last year since I've got the tubs behind a windbreak this year in view of the storm damage the plants got last year.

Maybe due to the better weather and higher temps enjoyed between plantings, the soil/compost being slightly warmer, seed tubers being more advanced, and moisture content etc.
