  • In or out?

Having germinated inside I am putting some of my seedlings in the greenhouse during the day and brining inside at night. They are - tomatoes, peppers, chillis, courgette, gherkins. They are all looking healthy. Eventually the tomatoes, chillis and fgherkibs would stay in the greenhouse and the courgettes get planted out. Don’t know when I can move them permanently into the greenhouse. Have other seedlings broad beans, peas and sweet corn that are still inside - should I be putting them outside during the day? Some are only just through. They will all be going outside so maybe want to skip the greenhouse and go to cold frame then out? My house is getting taken over by seeds !

Broad beans are tough - peas are pretty tough too - I'd be inclined to get them out. My seedlings are mostly out in the GH 24/7 now - though I am in sub-tropical North Devon...

It depends where you are Annie and what overnight temps you are having, the tougher stuff like my out door veg are in the greenhouse, but toms and chillies are in the conservatory still. With over night temps down to 5 degrees inside the greenhouse, I'm waiting a bit yet. Seed grown onions have been planted out and peas, carrots, parsnips and broad beans have been sown outside(I also have peas and broad beans in the greenhouse in root trainers.

I’m in the south. My seedlings have been out in the greenhouse for a few weeks now

I've got all of those things in my polytunnel ( but not chillies ). I do cover them with fleece or propagator lids at night.

Ok thanks for the advice. Am going to be brave and out my broad beans and courgettes in the greenhouse overnight. Will cover with a propagator lid. Think I’ll keep taking tomatoes peppers and chillis in at night for now. Still deciding on the peas. I’d like to just put in the beds - they are on wee compost pots but they are still pretty wee.

Be careful with putting anything not hardy out (even in the greenhouse) over night. Recently it has been VERY warm for the time of year and it is about to go back to normal. There are multiple 3s and 4s in the night time forecasts here for the next week, along with a 2 for Saturday morning. This will severely check the more tender plants such as tomatoes, peppers, corn and courgettes.

Peas and broad beans should be fine in the greenhouse but they will grow slightly more slowly out there than in the house.

Thanks. Have only left the peas, broad beans and courgettes out but have covered them and wrapped in fleece. 8 is forecast for tonight but will keep an eye out for later this week. Looks like it might be getting colder again.

What size is your greenhouse, the larger the greenhouse the warmer it stays overnight, all my plant, seedlings etc. are in the greenhouse, if it is going to be cold I cover everything with fleece or if no fleece I cover overnight with newspaper

it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.
