been doing some potting on of cucumbers, tomatoes, courgettes etc in the poly-tunnel this morning and noticed some damage to a few of the leaves.
If you are like me a bit mean (tight, careful, thrifty ...) then you may also use some garden soil to mix in with your bought compost to give it a bit of body and help it go a bit further. Of course doing this does mean you can bring some unwanted "visitors" in as well. So sure enough, a look at the bottom of the pot in question revealed a couple of slugs and checking the others nearby I found a few more.
Actually I've found the road outside my drive to be a good source of washed soil as there is a drain nearby which always silts up and so new soil is often added as the rain washes it down the lane to me. I can vary the amount of grit in it too by going a bit further up as the heavy bits with stone and gravel in stop moving first. The bit at the end when it floods in my drive sometimes is like very fine silt.
