  • tomato growing in the greenhouse

I have an 6 x 8 foot greenhouse that I am planning to grow some tomato plants cucumbers and possibly some chillis

Last year I grew them all in grow bags and had some reasonable success , this being my second year at it I am trying to plan and think about things alittle more

I plan to grow the gardeners delight and money maker toms in grow bags with a watering ring and a tray underneath the grow bag which i will put holes in the bottom of

would it be of benefit to use some gravel in the trays about an inch deep ?

Is it best to grow the cues in the same way or would these be better in pots 12 x 12 ?

I have bought another greenhouse from flea bay for £25 that I collect later on today and my plan was to grow the chillis in there as it need not be as humid not sure on all the types of chilli as they came from plug plants that my wifes farrier gave her

Also grew some melon last year

    any advice welcome

One alternative with grow-bags which I have used in the past is to set them vertically rather than horizontally - the basic plan is to use half a grow bag per plant, this gives a better space for the roots to grow in and has a secondary advantage that they are a bit easier to move later in the season should that become desirable. To do the halving - pick the bag up vertically by one end - fold in half so that both ends are on the ground then cut along the fold . The two "pots" that are created can have their cut edge rolled over and can be stabilized either by burying the bottoms in the border, or by having a stake driven through inside them down in to the ground.

I'd say the cucs would be better in pots, as I think would be the chillis. Be careful when you plant out the cucs as they are not keen on having any water puddling round their stems when young - a slight mound as opposed to a well on top of the compost is best. The cucs can be stood on a tray of gravel which is kept damp and they benefit from being farthest from the door inside the GH, as they prefer a moister atmosphere than the tomatoes do.

AFAIK, cucumbers dont like there routes being manhandled too much,

If the grow bag shifts, you might upset it, whereas with a pot, your be fine.
