  • Carrots not germinating.

    Help!

Sowed two separate lots of carrots over the last 5 weeks , last lot about two weeks ago and only had four germinate.

Sowed them direct into new beds which admittedly the soil is quite fertile however not sure how that would affect it.

Should I resow or give up?

Was it fresh seed or old stuff?

mine are germinating ok here in sub-tropical North Devon
I'd consider resowing - I heard some talk of an increase in temps later this week but haven;t checked the forecast.... maybe wait a couple of days if its getting warmer soon where you are....

Sowed 2 lots in the same tray, each variety down either half.
One lot has germinated fairly well, not a thing from the other half.

The no show lot could have been old, as in 2 years old.

Seems yours are in the ground and the temperture lately has dropped so will not help. Have noticed other years that they all appear in a shortish time, nothing then a couple, next day a good few more, by 4 days lots are showing. Also some seem to take longer to appear.

Need to look at transplanting mine in a few days - after the weather ceases being poor.

I also have germination in the not so sub-tropical

            I'd sow more as well.

One of the things that can cause poor germination in carrots is if they dry out. We did have a warm spell a week or so ago and some of mine have germinated very patchily despite my efforts at keeping them moist. I'd sow some more - I'm going to, but just waiting until the cold night tomorrow has gone.

Could there be slugs eating the seedlings before you even get a chance to see them?

One trick I've seen recommended in France is to sow radish seeds alongside. The radishes come up quicker and provide shade for the seeds as they germinate. I've never done it so can't say if it works. I was going to give it a go this year, just to see.

Not having much luck down here.

Top soil is very dry. Perhaps soak drill overnight and try in the morning.

1st lots were under a cloche and I was away for a few days.

Hi, I first sow the seeds in standard propagators and didn’t have any luck with carrots. Then I bought parasene self watering propagator, nearly all of them came out. I think the dlfference is that the parasene one keeps the compost moist.

You could of course try chitting them and putting them in loo rolls or just plant the chits direct.
Did this for the first time this year , a bit fiddly but you know whats occuring as they say
