  • Weed tea fertilizers

    Hi all,

I have been steeping some nettle and weed teas. I have read to dilute the tea 1 to 20 with water before applying. I am wondering which vegetables will benefit from them and at what stage. Is there a good resource for this? It smells so bad, I have to admit I am feeling a bit queasy about applying it.

In case you like reading and typing, I've listed what I have growing. Everything is planted in the ground except those mentioned. I have:

    Garlic (planted in Feb)
    Shallots (planted in Feb)
    Leeks (tiny seedlings)

Strawberries (only one starting to flower)
    Blackcurrants
    Boysenberry
    Thornless blackberry

Climbing French beans (planted out recently, one to two sets of true leaves)
Sweetcorn (planted out recently, ranging from 3 to 8 inches tall)

Calabrese (seedlings planted out recently, one to two sets of true leaves, quite small)
Cabbage (seedlings planted out recently, one to two sets of true leaves, quite small)
Purple sprouting broccoli (seedlings to be planted out soon)

Chillies (one to two sets of true leaves in pots)

Tomatoes (range of sizes in pots)
Aubergine (seedling, to remain in pot in greenhouse)
Potatoes (Some with foliage, some not broken the surface)

Courgette (working on third true leaf, to be planted out soon)
Butternut squash (seedlings to be planted out later)

    Thanks

Weak rea is the colour to go for from what I've read. My weed tea is a mix and match affair so I regard it as a general fertilizer and just bung it on relatively ad hoc - that's my style in general - not really answered your question, someone with more clarity will be along shortly. My tea smells lovely at the moment, I'm considering drying and smoking some...

"Like" does not imply support for the "dry and smoke" approach...

My weed tea smells like manure. The pure nettle tea - I don't even know what else smells that bad.

Thanks for the input. It is certainly useful to know that it's quite an all-purpose affair.

Our England is a garden, and such gardens are not made
By singing-'Oh how beautiful!" and sitting in the shade,
While better men than we go out and start their working lives

If it's general weed tea then a wet about every week to 10 days over everything is a good rule of thumb (there goes that thumb thing again).
Specific teas like nettle or comfry can be used more applicably as the plants green up or flower and fruit. If the soil is generally in good heart then the rule of thumb works as well as anything.
