Is this slug damage?

I sowed some lettuce seeds at the start of April. Duly covered it with a plastic cloche from Homebase >clicky<. I had a look two days ago and the lettuce was growing beautifully. I had a look today and found this:



I couldn't spot any culprits nearby. I presume it was slugs. A little surprised a cloche didn't ward it off but then again there were vent holes in the top. Unless they came from underneath

I was planning to sow some more lettuce today. This has put me off.

Looks like slugs or snails, don't give up, check and you might find the culprits nearby!

Have a look for holes in the soil as I've seen my slugs coming up through the soil.

I also have raised beds and found that putting some bamboo canes down the corners can stop the slimey critters having corners to hide in.

Get the impression of snails.
Devious little blighters, seem more resistant to pellets than slugs.

just comes naturally to me :-) no drugs required, though I do feel I may be getting worse now I've accidentally stumbled in to VeggieChicken's sphere of influence - I'm not the only one I suspect.

Honestly did not know slugs did that. I noticed some disturbed soil. Must be where they're hiding.

I've got aluminium frames in the corners of my raised beds.

Has anyone successfully grown lettuce and brassica in raised beds whilst avoiding it all being munched on by slugs? If so, any tips would be welcome.

As before - wait until its fully dark - go out with a torch and odds on you will find some of the culprits - the bit about them rushing past you was a joke though ;-)

I just put a few slug pellets down and if the damage stops- QED.
One thing. Usually at this time of year i wouldnt bother with a cloche for lettuce. Its pretty tough( unless you are a slug when its tender and delicious)
