  • Heritage tomatoes

    Hi,
Just registered today after finding this site.
I have a thing about tomatoes.
"You can never have too many tomatoes" is my motto. Fresh, tinned, all sorts.
Anyway, I've been growing toms for a few years now in pots in my small garden in west Dorset. Always have Ailsa Craig on the go as they are reliable and tasty with sometimes others which haven't been so good. Best was seeds from Portugal a few years ago.
This year tried some different ones too, Tigerella, Cour di Bue and Ildi and they all seem to be doing well.
After reading all about toms for a couple of days I decided to concentrate on English heritage varieties only(as far as I can work out) and some rare ones at that so the ordering commenced.
Essex Wonder, sort of remember these as my mum grew them on our allotments.
    Cavendish
    Golden Sunrise
    Red Robin
    Outdoor Girl
    Stonors Exhib
    Harbinger
    Super Marmande
    Tangella
I just wanted to taste more old fashioned tomatoes and maybe some won't be great but I'd like to try and keep some good ones going.
    Any views of course welcome.

Hi and welcome to the Forum.
There are plenty of tomato enthusiasts here. A good place to start would be https://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gr...5-a_86401.html

      Thanks.
      Oops, missed that one.
Is there any way that my post can be transferred over?

Its a thread for reviews so, when you've grown a tomato you can add your opinion for other's benefit.
Only a couple of months to wait.

              Hi robbra, and welcome.

Another vote for Golden Sunrise here. I think it was the first yellow tomato I ever grew from seed. I've got too many varieties to be able to grow them all every year, but I'm looking forward to having it again this year. Although it's not particularly rare, if that was one of your criteria.

And I'm pretty sure Marmande is a French heritage variety rather than English

Thanks for all the welcomes and replies.
As it's too late to plant my new purchases I'll only be able to judge Ailsa Craig, Ildi, Tigerella, Cour di Bue, Black Cherry and Ananas.
One I'd love to get is Victory, in 1981 I ordered them from a Dickson Brown and Tait 1962 catalogue but lost track of the seeds with moving. It was all they had as they were closing down. 1/3d in the catalogue but 62p inc p+p when bought.
Chriss11, yes marmande is french, can't win them all.
I will definitely go for a seed swap.

                    Scarlet,
I will join the seed circle, won't have much of a selection this year but next year I should have.
I did a post here this morning about 7.30 and it hasn't appeared so hope this one will.

That last post appeared so I'll summary what I wrote earlier.
There is one variety I'd like to get and it's Victory. I first bought this in 1981 from a 1962 Dickson Brown and Tait of Timperley catalogue, one of my dads' and I'm still looking at it. It was their only type left as they were shutting down. I lost track of my seeds moving several times. I don't know if it's related to Clibes Victory so may plump for that one.
                      1962 price 8d 1981 62p inc p+p.
17 listed plus 2xF1, I can't trace most. If anyone is interested I can list them is asked.

                        missing posts

                        Can anyone help please?
Yesterday I did 2 posts, one early morning and one around 8pm. Neither have appeared. The first said it needed approval, the second pressed submit then no post. Is there something as I'm a new member or does this happen often?

I’ll check it out Rob - it could have something to do with you being new.
It’s not a normal thing - did you add a link in it/or a photo?
