Potting on Sweet Peppers and Chilis into their final pots

Hi,

This week I intend to pot on my sweet peppers and chilis into their final pots. I'm a novice gardener and this is my first year of trying this. They have been merrily growing on a bedroom window sill since March, and were potted into 1L pots of MPC & John Innes No.2 around 6 weeks ago.

I have acquired a number of Morrison's 10" flower buckets and I have drilled 8 holes in each some 1 inch from the base (am thinking of adding more holes in the base). I intend to fill them with a 50/50 mixture of MPC & some unused Levington tomato grow bags from last year that were never used. I'm worried about drainage so should I be adding some perlite or vermiculite to the mix? Or shall I just drill more holes in the buckets?

The sweet peppers are a Wilko variety for outdoors, and I will place the pots on my allotment. The chillis are a mixture and will go in a greenhouse on a neighbours plot.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Forgot to add they are starting to flower, so should they be repotted during this time?

Flower buckets perfect. Holes in the bottom general not round the edges. No harm trying though. Perlite or vermiculite is a good addition. Get them potted on ASAP.
If you find the compost dries out to quickly with the holes round the edge. Next year just line the sides with an old compost bag.

I use flower buckets - there's probably no more than 8 holes on the bottom - I used a hot screw driver to push in some holes. So you will probably be fine.
If your peppers are flowering I would move them now. Don't forget to harden them off before leaving outside full time.

I use the same 10 inch buckets and do the same as us you uper Sprout, holes in the bottom and around the sides ( around 5 ) as close to the base as i can.
I also drill much smaller holes around the sides of the whole of the pot ala airpots ( also for toms) . As SP says though the water can come out of the sides but at least you will deffinatley know the compost is too dry.
Perlite/vermiculite will deffinatley help with the drainage although personally i dont, plenty do though, good luck
