  • Garlic Problems

Has anyone any idea why some of my autumn planted garlic has not bulbing up. I planted two types. One was Albigensian Wight which has done very well. But the other, which was given to me, is an un-named purple skinned variety which although has good top growth has not produced cloved bulbs. Both types of garlic where planted in rows next to each other in the same bed at the same time and have both been treated in the same way with watering and feeding.

I’d grateful for any advice to help me understand what has or has not happened so I can learn for future planting.

    Best regards,
    Greg

Can't help. But you're not alone . Some of mine hasn't bulbed and none have split into cloves. Just hoping I was to early when I had a poke round under the soil (yesterday).

Well I thought that. That I may be looking a bit too early. As these are an unknown variety I wondered if the may be later maturing? Trouble is I don't know how long to leave them. Problem is I need the space!

Just noticed a couple of flower spikes
I officially give up on garlic. It's now on my never growing again list

Could it be that the unknown one was a spring planting garlic?
Don't know enough about garlic to say what the difference would be!

Let me start with "I'm no expert but...." (as that doesn't stop me from commenting!). I think it's early. Isn't the old wives (bunkum) saying that one should plant garlic on the shortest day; harvest on the longest, that gives you about 3 weeks. Normally we let the foliage yellow and die back. Our main issue is leaving them a little long and the cloves start to separated instead of that nice tight bulb.

Give them time grasshopper.... Or pick 'em now and use 'em they taste the same, just a bit hard to get the right dose!

The person who gave me the cloves said that it was Autumn planting but you could be correct. I will have to contact the person and see how his own planting had gone.
