  • which need more sunlight in a greenhouse?

    cucumbers or tomatoes?

  • #2
Tomatoes need the light more, they also prefer the atmosphere to be drier than cucs do, so as a compromise put the cucs on the shadier side and furthest from the door.

Sweet potatoes need as much sun as possible. I tried to grow some in a shadier part of the greenhouse and it was hopeless - nothing big enough to eat.

If I grow my cucs on the sunniest side of my GH they wilt but do pick up again later on in the day not sure if it does them any harm.

Interesting re sweet pots - my reading was that it was soil heat they needed rather than sunlight per se. I am hoping that putting them in the greenhouse will help.

TBH, I grew Beauregards outdoors for the last two years, and had carrot-sized ones 2 years ago and nothing last year, so I'm not holding out any hopes, especially as these are sprouting supermarket ones.

This year, the biggest sprouter is going to share with something in the GH in a big tub

(I'm going to put some in the garden and keep the soil covered with black pond-liner to see if that keeps the temperature up enough)

Wilting can indicate a problem sometimes, as it shows the plants are temporarily short of water. With tomatoes this water shortage means they are more likely to develop fruit with some blossom end rot.
