What's happened to my lettuce?

So this is my first attempt at growing lettuce. I know they're slugfests and hopefully future lettuce will be safe once the nematodes kick in.

I bought little gem lettuce. One plant (on the right) looks to be the right shape but the first one (on the left) looks nothing like a little gem lettuce. It also has rusty looking spots (as well as slug holes).

Whe you say "you bought them" do you mean as plants or seeds?

If the one on the right had more space it might sprawl too,if you plant them close together in a line they might be more uniform,yours look fine though,the spots could be little sap sucking insects you can cut off the bits that look horrible & sow more seeds

Yes theyre seeds from moreveg. Sowed three seeds in a square.
