  • Blueberry... help plz

Hi all can someone help please ...Our blueberry bush hadn’t flowered this year but instead has produced long green katkin shapped buds.... any ideas as to what’s happening ??

  • #2
This cannot be your blueberries doing this. Try and trace the catkin bearing stem down to the soil level and pull it to see if it is indeed your blueberry plant or another plant altogether. Did you support your blueberries last year with twigs by any chance?

Likely answer already supplied by Cheops, but if you're still unsure try posting a photo if you can, and we'll have a go at identifying the catkins :-)

very strange indeed, how is is it grown,in the ground or pot,and what what compost,i also agree with it NOT being the blueberry, you could also wait and see what emerges,by catnin shape do you mean, long and thin,is it solid or fury.

That isn't a blueberry - the leaves are wrong. It looks like a birch tree:

                  The leaves are quite different.

I agree with the others - I'm sure its not a blueberry - looks like its a type of Alder to me.

That is not a blueberry, catkins shouldn't be there and the leaf is not a blueberry.
At a guess sometime late last year a squirrel has dug a hole and deposited a small nut/seed of some sort in the pot and it has grown up amongst the stems and so appears to be part of the blueberry.

Would like to see a photo of the whole bush, just have a feeling you are growing something that is not a blueberry in any part and that through whatever reason the blueberry has died and the "whatever" has took over residence.

How much did you prune last time?

Hi all lol I’ve looked closer and I can see there are 2 swowrate strems coming out of the pot the small one is the blue berry and the large one is a tree as you all suggest a birch I think ... we do have squirrels so mister solved!
I’ve been pruning a birch tree ... as I thought my blueberry wasn’t fruiting ....
novice strikes thank you all for solving it!
