    • Crystal lemon cucumbers : 11 + 1 = 12 (have about five well-developed but not quite fully ripe, including two I will keep for seed, plus several teeny ones that I suspect will come to nothing given the change in the weather)
Patty pan squash: 1 + 2 = 3 (plus a few lost to blossom end rot but still producing female flowers)

              • Today, 4lb 8oz courgettes, 1lb patty pan and 5 cucumbers. It’s been 3 days since last harvest as it was dusk and raining when I left work yesterday.
Thank goodness we both enjoy courgette soup!

                    • Crystal lemon cucumbers : 12 + 1 = 13. The two being kept for seed are nicely ripened, but I'll leave them to get overripe before harvesting. That (and the change in weather) does seem to be making my remaining cucumbers rather humble in size, but the one I had today still tasted good. I think I may get another six smallish ones if I'm lucky, plus the two for seed.

Patty pan squash: 3 + 0 = 3. Still flowering, but even female flowers I've taken time to pollinate don't seem to be getting anywhere.

I'm quite happy with the 22+ cucumbers per plant (one of each type). Usually they're in the greenhouse growing up a trellis this year they're sprawled out on one of the beds. Next year I'll probably grow them out doors up one of the gallows.

There's 3 courgette plants so it's just under 20 per plant but there's still quite a few female flowers and enough male flowers to pollinate them to bring them up to count. I could get away with 2 plants really (some would say I could get away with 0 plants) so next year I'm thinking 2 courgette and 1 or 2 yellow crookneck. I bought a yellow crookneck squash the other week at the Newcastle Veg Show and at first go wasn't going to bother sowing the seeds but when roasted or in a stew it seemed to develop a sweet almost nutty flavour so I'm going to go for it.

While I was at the Veg Show one of the categories is most unusual veg. There was a couple Umming and Ahhing at one of the exhibits and guessed it might be a kind of apple. It has a yellow patipan - even my mother knew that First and Second prizes were dudis. At least that's better than the other year when one of the entries was a lettuce.
