Spinach is a fast crop, they'll be up again in no time! Don't lose heart.

(Having said that, this is a bad time to start spinach generally - I find leafy things love to bolt as soon as the longest day has been and gone, and the hot dry weather doesn't help.)

      No.

For one thing, spinach isn't a brassica.

For another they are diseased. You want to start off with a disease ridden plant and expect it to become a healthy plant - won't happen. The best a diseased seedling will make is a diseased plant - although it's unlikely to get that far.

The disease spores are spread on the air and love the damp, sodden conditions you kept your compost in.

I will say I had a good crop from spinnach a few weeks ago which is now not producing as prolific but this latest sowing was a hardier perpetual spinnach.

Spinach is a cool weather crop and is best in spring. I've found it has done very well this year, but all of my spinach is now well and truly bolting. I won't be sowing any more until autumn (for overwintering) now, because every single time I've tried to grow spinach in the summer it has bolted when it has only about 4 tiny leaves.

Have you tried a soil based compost like John Innes. I find that I have less problems with damping off than with the peat/cor based composts. Having said that I find that the French composts are rubbish so I now make my own with soil, seived compost, sand and leaf mound. Better drainage and if it does dry out much easier to make damp again.
