I have just lifted the first spuds of the year! Pentland Javelin, not a bad crop from one plant. Unfortunately most of the spuds have split, this looks quite an old wound as it seems to have healed over. I am assuming that this was caused by the massive downpour we had about 3 weeks back followed by very little rain since. also noticed a white mold on the tubers and roots and although this washed off nicely I'm not sure of the cause.

The splitting is almost certainly due to uneven watering. I don't know what the white mould is but if there were traces of mould on the tubers I would not try to store them. Eat ASAP.A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP. - Leonard Nimoy -
Agree, splitting potatoes is caused by uneven watering. Are they is grow bags? If so, I've seen "compost mould" on potatoes in the past.Comment

The spuds are in rows in the ground and earthed up. I usually only water if the ground gets very dry. When we had the storms about 3 weeks ago the veg plot was flooded with about 6" of water by local runoff so the ground got saturated - better for growing rice than spuds! Perhaps I should have continued watering through the following dry spell although I think its possible the damage was already done.
Good point is they were the best tasting potatoes I have eaten since last years, just a faff cutting out the splits.
The soil is clay so holds moisture pretty well and I haven't seen any of the local farmers watering yet.Comment
