I have just lifted the first spuds of the year! Pentland Javelin, not a bad crop from one plant. Unfortunately most of the spuds have split, this looks quite an old wound as it seems to have healed over. I am assuming that this was caused by the massive downpour we had about 3 weeks back followed by very little rain since. also noticed a white mold on the tubers and roots and although this washed off nicely I'm not sure of the cause.

The splitting is almost certainly due to uneven watering. I don't know what the white mould is but if there were traces of mould on the tubers I would not try to store them. Eat ASAP.A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP. - Leonard Nimoy

The spuds are in rows in the ground and earthed up. I usually only water if the ground gets very dry. When we had the storms about 3 weeks ago the veg plot was flooded with about 6" of water by local runoff so the ground got saturated - better for growing rice than spuds! Perhaps I should have continued watering through the following dry spell although I think its possible the damage was already done.
Good point is they were the best tasting potatoes I have eaten since last years, just a faff cutting out the splits.
The soil is clay so holds moisture pretty well and I haven't seen any of the local farmers watering yet.
