  • Lifted onions

My autunm planted onions decided it was time to be lifted and fell over last weekend.

My question is how to deal with the leaves, do you cut them back or allow them to die back?

leave them on 'til they have completely died down and turned brown - best put them under cover somewhere, as if we get rain then chances are the onions will regrow and start splitting.

I cut the leaves back when they’re dry. I leave them to dry on a metal greenhouse shelf outside, air circulates well with them. In the evening I move them into the summerhouse where they’ll stay. In a few days the mud will break/brush off the roots & the roots can be cut as close to the bulb without scissors touching the bulb! Also the stems will be dry so I cut them leaving about two inches of stem, some people tie them so they must leave a bit longer stem or something? I leave them on a tray in the summerhouse singularly, out of sunlight.

I leave the leaves on so that the bulb can absorb the last of the goodness. Once they've dried I use the leaves to plat them into an onion string to hang them in the cupboard.

Whatever you do, don't pull them up, put them down and forget all about them.

I wonder what silly chicken did that?

          Make good spring onions though.
