  • Been abroad for a year and need some advice

Hi, i've been travelling for 12 months and i'm flying back home tomorrow. I share a plot with my grandad but he's not been able to do anything this year due to poor health.

Currently on the plot is a large rasperberry patch and some supports if I want to grow peas.

I have no seedlings so I was wondering what I could turn around to get some produce this year.

I was thinking courgettes as they grow fairly quickly but anything else you can suggest so the ground doesn't go to waste this year would be much appreciated.

It's a fairly large plot, so I have more than enough space.

    Thanks!

Winter Brassicas like cabbage, brussels, swede etc, probably get some plants from the local garden centre

Still time to sow winter brassicas, turnips, beetroot, chard and leaf beet, quick growing carrots, lettuce, chicory, runner beans (just), late peas (Terrain is a mildew resistant variety), florence fennel, herbs (parsley, chervil, coriander). Worth buying plants of courgettes and tomatoes if you get on with it and leeks. Later on you can sow autumn sown onions, winter spinach, corn salad, oriental leaves, chinese celery, spring onions, broad beans and peas and plant garlic all to overwinter.

The tricky bit is leaving enough space for things you want to plant next spring!

It’s a good time to sow direct, put some peas in & cover them with some metal shelving or the mice get them. On my list I’ve got -
Sow in June -first early potatoes if you have any or does anyone on the plot have a spare few, cabbage January king, broccoli summer purple, turnip, swede, lettuce, rocket, carrot, bingo peas, radish, rhubarb chard.
Sow in July -swede,beetroot,lettuce,rocket,turnip,carrot purple haze, radish kulata cerna.

Also look into a few DIY/Garden centres. They sometimes have the leftover veg plant strips that can be saved by planting and watering to give you established growth.
Of the options suggested I recomend you plant what you will likely eat, carrots, beetroot, lettuce, spinach, successional peas.

I'd also advocate either green manure or sheet mulching the uncultivated beds to prepare them for next spring. That way the amount of digging or preparation will be minimal and won't sapp your enthusiasm or interfere with the few days decent weather when you need to get on with it.
