  • Own onion sets

I scattered about 200 Alica Craig onion seeds last night in a garden planter.
With view to growing some sets for next year and give me a small supply of salad onions in about 8-10 weeks.

Any seeds I sow are usually started off indoors in pots....maybe worth a try though, let us know how you get on.

The thread mentions storing in a propogator for 3 months.
I wonder if an airing cupboard would suffice.

That was to heat treat the sets to inhibit bolting - a temp of 25C was suggested. No idea what temp your airing cupboard is?

I'd say probably about 25 degrees.

Maybe this idea is ok to experiment, but needs a tried and proven method before relying on this for the whole of next years onion crop.

You sounded confident in your first post!
Have you done it before or is it an experiment?

Did you try the heat treatment method and if so did it work?

You're mention tried and proven method. Remember - you're talking to VC here.

Why not split the seeds - sow some now to grow as sets, sow some in August to as overwintering onions and some in January undercover to plant out in Spring and see what happens with all three lots.

Seems to me that you could be adding extra steps (stopping growth, storage, replant) when you could just let them grow into full onions. Sets are handy and convenient for those of us who have no success growing from seed, but if you're growing the seed to make the sets anyway.

I didn't even get as far as growing something set size. All gardening is an experiment for me.
