  • Too late for sugar snap peas?

The sugar snap peas i started in april have not done well...
(Mice, cats, and children are too blame!)

Is it too late to start some from seeds?

This time will keep the seedlings indoors until establised to keep the mice away. The cat incident was hopefully a one off and i can do nothing with the children apart from growing extra plants!

No harm in trying - how it works out will depend a lot on the weather.

If you sow in containers, put them somewhere shady to germinate as they don't want to be too hot.

When it comes to planting out you're going to need to water the ground thoroughly first unless we get a ton of rain. Probably the best bet is to make shallow trench on the soil then run a hosepipe in that and fill it up several times with water - do this the day before. You're going to have to keep watering regularly as peas will not do OK unless they have moist soil.

It possibly depends on the variety - I'm growing Sugar Magnolia, which are huge plants (about 8ft tall). These take a lot longer to grow than plants that are a more normal height, so check the packet as the tall ones probably would not have time. No harm in trying though if you have the space.

Sorry - forgot to say these will be grown in pots / containers in the garden. Have put some sugar lace seeds in a propagater to be kept in the garage, but wonder if it will be too hot for them to grow. Time will tell, and note to self, next year grow a lot more as the kids keep pulling them up when they try to pick the peas!
