  • The Memory of Pumpkins

... because I thought we had a thread for sharing our successes, failures and tips with pumpkins (and perhaps for trying to grow a whopper) but it turned out it was just my imagination.

So on the sage advice of Small Pumpkin, I am starting one...

The flowers are spectacular, just huge... that's a very big bee in on this one! They're drunk with nectar and covered in pollen.

I do love Crown Prince. I think I'll be resurrecting that one in the seed tin for next year.

My pumpkins are jack-O-lantern they are starting to change colour now but if it is forecasted to be very cold or frost should I cut them off and move them inside, and if I cut them off while still green will they ripen inside

it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

You can ripen them inside, takes a lot longer than it seems to on the vine. I ripened a couple last year when the fruit set quite late, they were just starting to turn too. They were 'halloween' from unwind rather than jack-o'-lantern but doubt it'll make a difference

Here's a pic from the beginning of Aug - I haven't been on the plot for a couple of weeks because of hols, work and bad weather. Looking forward to seeing how they've done!

Proper big pumpkins !! They're looking brilliant.

Can't grow big ones up here (well I can't). A couple of my squash are bigger than my pumpkins this year. It's all very exciting and I Can't wait to start eating them.

You know, I don't have any proper, nice eating winter squash (as opposed to pumpkins for carving) this time. I had one rouge vif d'etamps plant, but it didn't fruit for some reason. Unless I find something when I start clearing, which has happened before!
