Other options are Walking onions, Rakkyo or Perutil but it takes a few years to get a big enough patch unless you get loads at the start.
I also have some white and red Welsh onions and some White Lisbon onions from Premier Seeds. Meanwhile, I've resown my North Holland Blood Red spring onions, in the hope they will avoid the cat this time!

I'm doing what Jay-ell is doing too I've used onion sets, planted after the longest day, only because I forgot about them, planted closely together with the idea of using them as spring onions as they wont make onions.
I also find spring onions tricky, though my neighbour direct sows on his plot and they do really well! I've direct sown and they are tiny so doesn't work for me.
In the past I've also sown into a larger pot closely together and that seems to work, but it does take ages
