  • When to harvest

I am growing Jack o lantern pumpkins, two are about eight inches in diameter and one at five inch, as it is starting to get cool at night when should I harvest them, and can I store them till Halloween
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

I'd say it was too early people often leave them on our plot right up to Halloween. We are farther South than you though.
They store well so if you are happy with the size you could do. You may even get more growth too.

I'm going to leave my pumpkin on until the leaves die down or are on the way out so that it hardens up, and then store it in a cool place, also gives it a chance to get bigger in the meanwhile, well that's what I'm hoping for
I'm sure I once saw on a gardening programme that they are ready when the stalk of the pumpkin starts to go woody, and also to leave a fair bit of the stalk on when cutting to prevent any rotting whilst in storage

Not yet Rary. Leave them till they have changed colour and the vine is looking very unhealthy, very close to dead.
I usually put straw under them so they're not sat on wet ground all the time. But I've run out this year. So I'm using broken bits of slabs and roofing slates. You only need to harvest early if there's going to be a frost.

yep, that’s it. I stupidly broke my best one today, so it’ll be the first for soup (it won’t store long as not properly ripe)
