Good Morning, our crop of savoy cabbages are about ready for harvest. My question is this, to avoid a glut, can some be left in the ground, or is it best to lift and then blanch what we are not using straight away? Many thanks.

If you leave them in the ground whilst the weather is warm they run the risk of splitting. I have never stored summer harvested cabbages but those lifted in the cooler months seem to store OK. I was taught that to store them you dig them up rather than cutting them. Hang the lifted cabbages by the root in a cool dark shed. Anither way is to remove any damaged leaves and store in boxes of dry straw, again with the roots intact.Last edited by Greenleaves; 14-08-2018, 08:40 AM.
