  • 'Wild' honey bees

Having been up to our new allotment site today I noticed that at the edge of the hole that has been dug (about 2ft square) for the water pipe has what looks like honey bees entering through tunnels about 6 inches down. Has anyone any advice about these bees. Eventually we will have to fill the hole in, and I suppose some people on site might be concerned about their presence. I am more concerned about what we should do to ensure they survive.
Ironically the majority of the commitee (of which I am a member), voted not to let bees be kept on site. As my son said, it looks as if the bees have other ideas. I would love to keep bees, and they are right on the corner of my plot! However I can see they might pose a problem right by the water tap.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

They sound like mining bees. We have these along our road, digging into the banks of people's front gardens. They aren't in the least aggressive - no-one's been stung yet - and they've been there for more years than we have (and that's 11!)

Any true honey bees living wild in Britain will have started from a swarm that didn't get re-hived (if it is true, as Mr Packham says, that there are no wild honeybees native to the country).
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

I don't know if they are true honey bees, but they look pretty much the same size, shape and colour. If I'd seen one in the garden, that's what I would have assumed it was.
