Wasp nest decoy - Homemade

I did post an earlier message about Wasp Nest Decoys, and did a bit of Googling and came across a homemade one. Going by their comments it seemed a sucess for preventing any nest building. Off to find some brown wrapping paper, not sure though what happens if it rains. Wondered if I were to cover it with some plastic, or will that defeat the object. The bought ones are quite expensive.

We made one using news paper covered in masking tape then it was sprayed with grey primer it seemed to work, but if you don't have any of these things to hand it will work out pricey to make.

Thank you Bren, I think there might be some grey primer somewhere in the shed, will look tomorrow. Will grey gloss paint do if there isn't any primer? I have masking tape. Your idea sounds better, I will have ago in the next few days.

Do you use some type of container to keep the newspaper in place while putting the masking tape around it I am trying to visualise it. Any instructions and photos welcome. Thanks again.

Kallie we sort of scrunched up the newspaper into a similar shape of the shop bought wasp thingies then before it could fall apart it was wrapped in masking tape seemed to work.
Another way would be to use a balloon then wrap that in newspaper and tape.

Made one from a balloon covered in newspaper and PVA, paper laminate, and three years later it is still going strong and it works!

Great ideas thanks to you both. With regards to the paper laminate roitelet,
I have a roll of clear sticky back plastic, would that be O.K?
I couldn't find any grey primer, so might go for the paper, pvc and plastic.

If you use news paper the PVA, of the waterproof sort, will make the ink run and you will finish up with a grey mucky finish. If in doubt give the finished 'nest' a coat of PVA and roll it in wood ash.

Sticky back plastic won't do as the sticky doesn't last very long when exposed to the elements.

My friend made one in similar fashion and it's lasted ages too - seems to work a treat!
