Rose Hive
Nothing wrong with it but you will struggle to find second hand frames etc. One hive quickly becomes 3and you need ideally to have everything interchangeable. I use the national hive, mainly due to my first nuc being on national frames. Nationals work which is why they are by far the most common but thats not a reason to not try others.

Thanks for the replies PW. I don't have anywhere to keep bees right now, I just was interested to see what other beekeepers thought of the idea of allowing the brood area to expand freely to a size determined by the hive, not the beekeeper.Location - Leicestershire - Chisit-land
Endless wonder.

As a beekeeper, part of the art is knowing what your colonies do. I have four hive quite happy sat on one brood box but a prolific 5th hive is on a brood and a half. Personally, I also like to know where the old girl is in the hive as its easy for her to drop out if you are unsure then thats a big disaster.
