Almost every night for months now it has become a habit for me to let my dog out last thing at night into the field behind the garden for a foray. Whilst she is doing this armed with a bright torch I go around the garden hunting slugs and snails. In the last few weeks I have noticed every night I see caterpillars, hairy ones, green ones and many more. I think what is happening is it is that time of the year where many caterpillars are ready to pupate or hibernate and they seek a safe place under the cover of darkness and out of sight of many predators. I don’t notice them during the day. So much is happening in our gardens at night which usually we are blissfully unaware.
