This morning I pulled a handful of blanket weed out of the small pond I installed on my allotment last Spring, and something slithered out and plopped back into the water... I really thought it was a fish for a minute, but then i noticed little white eggs amongst the weed, so i'm going with a newt! Just need some frogspawn now.

Newts are brilliant!
we have newts.
they are very difficult to spot as they are so quick. watch out for little "pop" sounds (quite sharp), then look for a flurry of teeny feet near there and a vanishing tail.
I have seen mine by shining a bright light over the pond at night, they just drift. I try not to do this too often, as I don't want to do anything that might stress them.
One year we had to empty the pond and found over 20 of them, which was lovely.
Don't forget, they don't stay in the pond all the time, so don't be too surprised if they aren't there all the time.
