Badger road kill...

I've just found out that the local badger societies would like to be informed if anyone spots a dead badger which is lactating.
They can then rescue any pups which would otherwise die of starvation.
It would mean pulling over in the car ( if it's safe) and just checking.

I think some (don't know if all) badger groups like to be informed of any dead badger- my boss is something to do with our local one and several people sought him out to inform him of a freshly splatted one down the road. I believe it has to be someone 'suitably qualified' who disposes of them.

Quite sad that I've only ever seen badgers that are dead. Would love to see live ones rooting about

Wouldnt it be wonderful to watch them rooting around, undisturbed. I watched DA documentary some weeks ago, it was wonderful viewing.

Once saw a badger rooting around on my way into work at stupid 'o' clock am, was really surprised to see how massive/solid it was, normally only see them on tv so it really made my head turn

Twenty years ago my sturdy GSP came back towards me in the dusk trying to pick up a running creature..


Rabbit I thought and readied my stick....

then I realised it was a badger and yelled LEAVE IT!.

Which he did, it moved in an unusual gait, a bit like a doormat with a pogo stick under the rear, reminiscent of an armodillo.

notic from list non in somerset or dorset (i live on boarder ) that would be why i see them all the time in the side of the road. saw 3 today on a five mile drive. think i will try wiltshire think thats closest.

Hmmm - I'm on the border of Bucks and Berks but neither of those groups are anywhere near me. Still, I will bear it in mind and contact one or the other if I see a dead badger. Very sad, lovely creatures.

I wonder if there are any volunteers nearer to you attached to wildlife hospital/sanctuaries?? Just a thought!

I usually only see dead badgers on the side of motorways where it wouldn't be safe to stop.
You would think that,knowing badgers use centuries old tracks, road builders would put underground tunnels in for them.Or maybe they do,does anyone know?
