How to deal with rat on plot?

Any advice on dealing with rat on plot?

I was on my plot today and saw a rat twice, whats the best way too deal with it? I would like rid of it as I am next to the hen pens on the plots, do I get some poison or what?

You have a couple of options.
1. Put down some rat bait - this can be bought in sealed bags and should be placed inside a short length of drainpipe or similar to discourage pets and birds from eating it. It should be placed near or at the place where you saw said rat.
2. Purchase a humane trap and carch it that way - though that leaves you with the problem of disposing the live rat after capture.
3. Get a loan of an air rifle and shoot the bugger - alternatively, if your plot is council run, contact their pest controller who should be able to rid you of the problem.

I expect your rat is after the hen's food. The chicken keeper could help by making sure food isn't left scattered around on the ground for the rats to get to.

I use a rat trap similar to a mouse trap only bigger and bait it with cooked meat usally chicken and it works,caught loads at work that way.

we have had a couple in our garden and the environmental health sent the rat man, and he just laid poison down (which worked). We have tried rat traps, but only managed to sever a small field mouse in half arrgh.

Rats can be difficult to trap, they are quite wary of new things in their environment and will actively avoid them. I would persevere with traps personally because it's over in an instant - it's illegal to release what the law refers to as "vermin" so with the live catching traps, you still have to dispose of the rat with an air rifle or suchlike. Poison works but it's a nasty end for the little critter that's just going about its business really, plus you have to be careful what you buy and where you put it because there is a chance that your non-target wildlife might find it. Hope you manage to sort it soon.
