Someone has taken up residence!

I am so excited! Didnt get around to telling you all as it was Hannahs birthday yesterday and I have been blitzing the house in preparation for parents visit on Friday...

I noticed a couple of weeks ago that a cheapie little bird house, made of reed, shaped like a honeypot that I got a couple of years ago (mainly for effect as I would never be so lucky of course!) had its entrance stuffed with leaves and the like. I wondered if I had a doormouse in residence but as I pointed it out to Oliver the other day, little Jenny Wren flew out. She was most indignant and perched on the nearby fence and tweeted for all she was worth - really telling us off she was! We retreated and have left the planting of the foxgloves for a couple of days to let her get over the shock as I was right up close with my finger pointing out the entrance - I couldnt have got any closer without touching it - I can be such a twat sometimes - LOL!!!

Oh lucky you Findon.Dandy. I bought a few of those little "grass" houses last year. They were supposed to be for the birds to use over the winter period as roosting boxes. I bought them from a proper bird supply company, not cheap!! but the little blighters have completely ignored them. They have a relatively short life (the houses that is) so I am not expecting much this winter either. I just wish Jenny Wren would oblige in his area. Come to that we get the odd goldfinch and a few dunnocks as well as the usual suspects but nothing as EXOTIC as a wren. Hope everything stays OK and that she and her partner continue to use your little house. (do Mr Wrens look the same and are they called Jimmy or something?) By the way, we were in the Finedon area last weekend and visited a lot of your country parks and were most impressed. Big, beautiful and no litter, especially of the little dog kind!!

I must admit I do feel very privilaged to live here, I think it is a quite beautiful yet underated county. We only moved here, from London, 2 years ago and for the first couple of months it felt like I was on holiday - the pace of life is so different here and yet its only 1 1/4 hours away from London! I will keep you updated on Jenny and Jimmy!

how lovely and how lucky!
I think.....is it the Wren that makes the most noise (for its size) of any bird in the UK - could also be any animal in the UK? please correct if I am wrong.

We have wrens in and out of the garden - and they certainly are noisy little beggars! They don't (yet) breed here but I can hope. I love them - our daughter is called Jenny!

I have had wren nests in the garden most years. The male keeps building nests until his bride-to-be finally gives the O.K. to one of them. One year when I cut back a honeysuckle with a clematis through it I found four wren nests, but only one had been used. Birds and humans have quite a lot in common - especially the female of the species.

I love northamptonshire too, my sister lives there and I love to go up there and go out to the country parks and the likes. Wish I could get a bird in my bird box the most I have seemed to get is a bit of rot!!
