HMM! That sounds like a similar set-up to my OH's house. His mum ended up having all the Ivy ripped down from the house last summer (a BIG job) and pest control came round and sorted the nest out - this summer there has been noticably less wasps, just a few here or there. There was another nest near the apple tree but they didnt bother us at all compared to last year when the Ivy was still up.

Seems to be a few around my raspberries, but nothing major - they don't seem to be bothered by me picking fruit and shooing them out of my way..

That said though, I did get stung in the neck when I was 16 odd, working in a petshop - on the phone to a customer. Don't think the dear old lady had heard such language before... really painful! So, if I see them getting agitated I leave now Before then I'd have just flicked them away heh, guess I learnt the hard way!

I've looked round the Net, but can't find anything about the link between ibuprofen and bee stings. However, I've found plenty of advice (from doctors) saying you should take it for bee stings

        Can anyone cite any sources?

My advice is NEVER use ibprofen when you are stung or at risk of being stung...

Same thing happened to me. I stood on it in the bathroom. Hurt like crazy, put on antihistamine cream and that helped. But then the ITCHING stage of recovery drove me around the bend!!!

Last time i got stung was 15 years ago when i was 15 at Sea Cadet camp. I used to catch them in my hand and release them before getting stung. Was quite successful until i forgot to open my hand once.

I've grown up since then, promise

the nest might be in the ground - also if you are allergic to wasps it might be useful to know that they love to feed off ivy so if you have it on your house/next door have it, be careful! we had some in a ground nest a few years ago, in between our house covered in ivy and the apple tree, there were hundreads of the things by summer and ended up ripping down all of the ivy from the house and calling in pest control and having the hive dealt with. now, there are hardly any, just an abundance of bees and honey bees
