I think they are mosquito larvae
I have them in my water buckets and I just carry on using the water as usual. Not sure how to get rid of them though.

wow, did'n't realise. would just tipping them out kill them? this isn't a water butt, but just a container i had laying about in the garden. what about emptying it into my compost to water it?

yes, best thing is to offer them to the fishes, or just let them get dried out (then the birdies in the garden will have a chance at them). They aren't the sort of mosquito that spreads malaria, they just bite and make you itch....

thank goodness for this post. We have them in our water butt and I've been dreading the day they grow up and I find out what they are!
Thanks guys, the fathers cleaning out the water butt as we speak

I've found adding duckweed to my water butts on the lottie keeps them away.

You can put goldfish in your butts to eat the larvae. I've had three goldfish in my butt (!) for the last 4 years, they love it.

We got 6 shabumbkins (hope I spelt that right) today for our water butts. I'm now suffering new pet anxiety

If they keep the water clean they will be a permanent fixture, otherwise I can see another fish tank looming

make them a pond, and just stick em in the butt when theres larvae, then you can get the pleasure of watching them, but with not as much hassle as a tank.

that was my excuse lol ... only thing is i've never seen any frogs and the fish will tend to eat the frogspawn ...... though you can take it out and put it in a tank i guess, to make sure you get new frogs
