We get frogs even though we don't have a pond, although this has only been since we went organic. I guess one of our neighbours has one so even if the fish ate the frogspawn in our pond, they would probably still be able to breed. The new fish seem very happy in their unusual home even though it was so hot today.

I'd not thought of goldfish in the water butt. Good idea for what to do with them when they outgrow the tank.

You know, if this was an American site, the whole idea of goldfish in your butt would probably be censored as obscene publication

I always dip my watering can in to fill it up. I would be a bit worried I either brained the poor thing and would need to check every canful. (what the hells this that's clogging up the spout!

On a lighter note I've just kidnapped (frognapped?) a froglet and saved it from being mangled by the lawn mower. It's in a large jar ready to be transported to my allotment pond!

I have four butts all linked. The fish are in No.2, and I dip my can into No.4

Update on fish in water butt

                Hi folks,

The fish are doing fine in their unusual home and the water is lovely and clean. Tonight we conducted an experiment to see if they could help us with another problem. Despite netting our cabbages, the clever butterflies STILL got through. I don't want to spray etc. so number 1 son picked off all caterpillars by hand and we fed one to the fish. After initial reticence the bravest one had a nibble then it was like a shark feeding frenzy. A bit gruesome but it felt less wasteful than just squishing them. I'm still hopeful that our garden will rebalance itself if we keep encouraging wildlife. There were two frogs in and around the cage as we we're clearing out.
