identifying a caterpillar

Ive found a caterpillar munching away on my strawberry plants, ive removed it but in curious to know if its a butterfly or a moth. It was brown with brown tufts and orange and white patches along its back, can ayone help?

I had a quick look at your link. I remember more than 30 years ago finding elephant hawk moth caterpillars on some rough ground. I still see the weeds they fed on, tall plants with purple flowers at the top, the same or similar to willowherb.
Nowadays there is so little "wild" ground, I think we are making a poorer world.

Just the thread I need! My cat brought me a present when I was tidying the front garden, it was a huge caterpillar!

It turns out its an elephant hawkmoth caterpillar, I'd never seen one so big. I wish I had more of them instead of cabbage white ones!

I'm finding a lot of hawkmoth caterpillars on my new allotment (it's still got lots of rosebay willowherb on it, that they feed on).
