  • Wellie as Capsid says it does sound like a redstart & they do breed in your part of the world. I found this site which has some photos of them taken this last week at a farm in Powys towards the bottom of the page, lovely birds, wish we had some!
    Common Redstart (Phoenicurus phoenicurus)
Into every life a little rain must fall.

    • tits, thrushes, pidgeons, and a blackbird, who is brave and gets very cross if i go in there. i think it has been with us for a few years now. yesterday, one of them pulled up my lettuce, just as they are finally forming the heads, so i am not very happy with the winged population today1 ( have wired the lettuce now)

It's always at the top of the tree especially after rain.
Is it maybe a song thrush if it's very high up & you can't see the speckles on it's chest clearly? They're smaller than mistle thrushes & don't have such big obvious speckles so it's possible.

        • "Extraordinarily Good Work Capsid and SueA" wrote Wellie with her Wildlife Teacher Hat on.....
Absolutely BANG ON with your deductions from my, rather brilliant description?!
I'm thrilled to know what it is, so Thank You both. I'm Pretty Pants at researching stuff on the computer, not having a technological fibre in my body, so I just do what I'm best at.... in the garden, gardening and appreciating my countryside.

          • Do I get a gold star? Or should that be a redstar(t)?

I'm favouring 'Smartie-Points', and if you have no objections, I'm going to award you A Whole Blue Smartie. Would that be Cool?
