We are generally pretty well off for butterflies here, surrounded by moor, hedges, and lightly managed pasture, but they do seem to hide during the counting period.
I live in a part of the UK with very mild winters. Please take this into account before thinking "if he is sowing those now...."

You might know the day after the count our garden is awash with butterflies including the first Peacock of the year, oh well kinda shows statistics aren't very accurate.
We had loads in our garden yesterday too - mostly painted ladies , Red Admirals, small whites and Meadow browns.
I think the warmer weather has brought them out.
The particularly loved the lavender and marjoram flowers.
