  • Finch??

    Hi all
I have lots of birds come to my feeding station but a couple of days ago there was a finch type bird which was the size of a wren. It looked a lot like the birds you get in pet shops. Do we have a domestic bird that is this small? I got a good look at it this time but I also saw it briefly a few months ago, so it is definitely living out there somewhere.

i spent hours a couple of years ago, looking for a yellow bird that looked like a canary ....... turned out to be a canary

try this The RSPB: Birds by family: Finches

if it's not on there, try this http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/birdidentifier/

It's not a goldcrest is it?

Thank you, Lynda, for the websites and yes, Flummery, it might be a goldcrest or perhaps a firecrest. I can't tell from the description whether these are as small as a wren. If they are, then it will be one of those. Yippee - something different. Had a paraquette (common as sparrows around here) and a woodpecker on there yesterday. Not bad for an urban garden!

There are both titchy jools - very much wren-like in size. I think the firecrest is a tad smaller. Lovely birds, both.

I haven't a clue what the millions of birds eating me out of house and home birdfood wise are as they're too quick and I'm half blind

Here's a previous thread about 'smallest bird' with pictures of firecrest & goldcrest.

When we were in Madiera a couple of years ago we were enchanted with the little greenish yellow birds flying about in gangs like sparrows. Took us a couple of days ro realise they were canaries.

Thank you Manda, for the link. Not sure at all now as I don't think my bird was as dull as the female nor as bright as the male. Completely confused! However, had one woodpecker, two jays, two rooks (okay, may have been crows), numerous paraqueets and tits today. You may think I do nothing but look out of the window but I promise I was cooking Sunday lunch at the same time!!!!
