  • Untidy gardens!

Just had a little group of goldfinches 'boinging' along the heads of the verbena bonensiries (sp!) and lavender. They've found some seed heads that haven't been eaten. I've also seen them on the heads of the rudbeckia and other upstanding flowerheads.

    How lovely!

I keep looking to dead head a load of my plants, but seeing as it's been so cold , I've left them for the birds! ( well...that's my excuse!)

I never deadhead in the winter. I always reckon it's to feed the birds. It is, too! (If it was warm though....)

Thanks for the pics SBP. Yes, they are gorgeous little birds and it pays to leave the dead heads on overwinter. We have the goldfinches as occasional visitors.
This weekend's the Garden Bird Watch so you'll be able to count the in.

When we were in Portugal last year the goldfinches were going about in gangs like sparrows. It was lovely to see them.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.
