  • Bird identification please?

Not a great pic but the yellow bird on the left is a regular visitor to my Dad's garden. Our best guesses are an oddly coloured greenfinch or an escaped cage bird Anyone have a better idea?

I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going boom boom boom
"Hey" he said "Grab your things
I've come to take you home."

With the tail, it looks more like an oddly coloured goldfinch.

Hi Seahorse, it looks like a Siskin to me, quite a common visitor at this time of year.

Second thoughts - looking at size compared with the Goldfinch opposite, I will plum for a Greenfinch. They do come in light or darker greens. Yep my money is on a greenfinch.

Try this The RSPB: Bird identifier
You can put in size, feather colours, beak colour etc. Although to be honest, none seem to match the one you've photographed
        Email the pic to RSPB?

The one on the right is definitely a Goldfinch

Looks like a siskin, they are in the same places as goldfinches. Do you have conifer woods nearby?

I'm wondering if it could be a Yellow Hammer, if it is, it's on the RSPBs 'Red List'. My only reservation is that the back and wings look a bit yellow compared to the examples, but it does have the same yellow cap and black band going round the back of the head as the one in your photo.

Looks really odd to me, not the right shape for a siskin and not enough black streaky bits/russet on it for a yellowhammer. Could actually be a canary... looks slightly bigger than the goldfinch to me too.

Shape and size indicate that it's definitely a Finch on the left in my humble opinion. Or a Canary!
(Siskins are more of a slender and smaller frame?)
... and a lovely Goldfinch on the right, obviously.
I hope you manage to identify it for real! Good Luck.X
