  • Anyone an expert or know alot about Bees?

Please could someone spare some time to review the data Bluebelle and I have collated for her science week project on Bees? If you could Pm me your email address I can send the word document.

Also has anyone any ideas on what else we could put in her display? She has coloured some pictures of bees to add to the words and will stand beside her display to answer any questions but it is lacking in a practical side. Last year (project about seeds) we did the experiment with growing beans, with, without light etc so we had the 4 jars there as well as other seeds for the kids to look at but this year I am stuck and she is losing interest. I did think about finding a bee keeper to bring along an exhibition hive but although he agreed as long as the weather was warm enough (and I somehow think it wont be) I didnt "click" with this guy (unusual for me eh) so feel a little uncomfortable with ringing him back up again.

    Hope someone can help

    Hi Tammy

I'm not a bee expert but I did study zoology at uni (including a fair chunk of entomology) and did about two-thirds of a primary-age PGCE (before deciding I wasn't cut out for teaching!), so I'd be happy to help if I can. I'll PM you for the word doc for starters.

How old is Bluebelle? Could she perhaps make a model of a honeycomb?

Take a strip of paper 3cm x 21cm (you can cut strips from a piece of A4 paper since that is 21cm wide), fold every 3cm so you have seven squares, then glue square 1 to square 7 so you have a hexagonal cell. Make a dozen or more of those, then glue together to make a honeycomb pattern.

More maths than science, but it will give her something to do for starters - and I'll put my thinking cap on re the science

You could try looking on the website of the Bumblebee Conservation Trust - they do lots of schools work and there are lots of free resources on the website.

Funnily enough, BW, I found their page on nestboxes whilst googling for ideas, and have emailed the link to Tammy
