  • Found a young sloworm today :o)

At the moment he's in a tank waiting for the children to get home from school so they can have a look, then he'll be put back in the undergrowth in the greenhouse. Mr G thought he'd chopped him in half as he was digging when he found him. Gorgeous orange colour on top with dark brown underneath and only about 4" long. About to go and take some photos

Ooh, how lovely! I went to uni with the now wildlife presenter Nigel Marven, and on our summer fieldtrip to Devon he used to catch slow-worms and take them back to the study centre. I took one into an evening lecture and it curled up inside my sweater sleeve where it was warm and dark

Aww! They're lovely and we tend to find at least one or two in our garden each year. Just wish they'd eat more slugs! Between them and the frogs they don't seem to get half the slugs I find each year!

Ohhh, lovely. They're in our area but I've never seen one in the garden. How lucky

We were digging on our new plot on Tuesday and came upon a nest of about 6 slow worms squashed flat by the digger tractors that have been tearing out all the brambles. It was very sad. A lot of the clearing was done by hand, and I know that they were trying to do as little damage to the wildlife as possible, but I suppose there were bound to be casualties. On the plus side there were also 3 or 4 lizards that were just coming out of hibernation. They were put under our shed for safety.

I'm hoping the lizards are still around on my plot. I can't remember now which summer it was that I saw them - possibly the first (2006), since we haven't had a hot one since then!
