  • do frogs migrate back to their birth place??

i put an ad on freecycle for some frogspawn, and got an email from someone who is filling in their pond and has frogs, which need a home, so the question is, do they migrate, or will travelling them a few miles on the bus make them lose their sense of direction??

ok probably a really stoopid question, but i've never had frogs and she was worried they'd get squashed going back down the main roads, so figured i'd better ask, as i'm not sure you can make gardens frog proof

Funnily enough this question was just asked (toady) sic at the lottie!

The reply I got was that if I could get some frogspawn for my pond from somewhere, once the frogs hatched their they WOULD return each year!

they do, but only locally, the bus ride will disorientate them, this came up last year when i phoned the local 'rescue' jobbies cos i want to relocate mine, due to cats torturing the poor beggers.
frogspawn should not be a problem, but adult frogs you have to be VERY careful with.

damp soil and no more than a few hours in the box.

i manage to relocate a few every week over to my mums, she is ten miles away and they stay happily at her house, too far to get back i guess.
it became an issue for me and mum 3 years back when so many frogs in sussex where dying from 'red leg'

now she has a thriving community, and i am not driven mad by the squealing of frogs being tormented by cats.

i am a tad worried as we have toad spawn in the garden this year, they spawn in damp soil, not water, and i am tempted to build them an 'enviroment' but again, the cats are so nasty to them, so if anyone fancies some toads?

are you sure they aren't newt or something else spawn? bride, cos toads usually lay strings in water, and frogs lay blobs

the frogs are about 5 miles away (and i can probably get a lift) but tis only one bus straight road ........ maybe i should put blindfolds on them

The common frog lays spawn in water, usually ponds and as lynda says toads lay strings of spawn (also in ponds). Newts lay smaller jelly like eggs singly on submerged leaves of pond weed.
The spawn like jelly on damp lawns and occasionally in pots that occurs in wet periods of winter and spring is caused by a type of fungus called a slime mould. It looks very similar to hydrated water retaining granules used in hanging baskets (and will not turn in to tadpoles).

The main concern with moving frogs or spawn is the potential to spread amphibian diseases such as red leg.

well as i have had my pond for 4 years and there are absolutely no frogs round here, i think we're safe on that score theres no frogs to transfer it to and none for the new frogs to get it off, have also been offered frogspawn today, which is much preffered, then i get baby frogs

              It depends.

Do they get to look out of the window on their bus ride? If yes, then they would probably be able to work out their way back.
