  • Is my pond pump dead?

    Hello all

I've just gone to turn my pond pump back on today and found that it's not working. I thought i had turned it off in Oct last year but today i found it plugged in. am i right to assume that the pump has died over the winter due to freezing pipes? Or will the pump have a thermostatatic switch?

    Any help much appreciated

I guess you have checked the circuit breakers, fuses etc?

The next step would be to take it apart, clean it and put it back together again and see if that works, if not then it probably is dead.

Personally I have two "pumps" in my wildlife pond (3m x 4m) and both are solar powered. One is a floating fountain - used only spring - autumn and the other is a solar oxygenator and that runs all year around - quite satisfying to here it running on a sunny winter's day. I guess it depends on what the pump is for.

Check the impellar (with it unplugged) as they sometimes sieze when turned off for a fair while.

Health and Safety man here(sorry),NEVER work on anything near or in water whilst still connected to the mains and use an earth leakage unit/breaker to give you some protection(sorry, risk assesments.......)

I have now changed the pump and it is working. Checked the fuse by testing it on something indoors, away from the water and it worked so I think the pump must have had it. Burnie is right tho, for god sake stay away from the water!
